Bookmaker on front inquiry
San Diego Union Tribune, United States - Mar 15, 2006
Racing Victoria launched an investigation into how generous bookmakers
had been after some said they had paid out on a Fremantle victory
just hours after last Sunday week's game finished in a draw.
Although the result was overturned by the AFL Commission on Wednesday,
some bookies said they had paid out thousands of dollars on a Dockers
win - as well as a draw - as a goodwill gesture.
Other bookmakers, including TAB Sportsbet, started paying out on
a draw immediately after the AFL declared the clash in Launceston
a tie, about 30 minutes after the game.
Racing Victoria's betting compliance and regulations department
was asked to match some bookmakers' ledgers with their claims they
had paid out thousands of dollars to punters who backed the Dockers.
After the inquiry was completed late last week, Beasley was told
he must attend an inquiry at Racing Victoria headquarters on Monday
at 10am.
The inquiry cleared another Melbourne bookmaker over his statements
on how much he had paid out on a Fremantle victory.
Beasley is understood to have said he had paid out $20,000 as a
goodwill gesture to six punters who had backed Fremantle.
As well as being one of the country's biggest bookmakers on racing,
Beasley was recently granted a sports betting licence, which allowed
him to bet on almost any sport.
Most bets are taken online but can be placed by phone or where
sports bookies are based at racetracks.
