Football fan wins on spread betting
San Diego Union Tribune, United States - Mar 15, 2006
A 50-year-old football fan from Surrey who recently won £375,000
on spread betting "could not quite believe" his bet had
been successful.
Father of three Clive Palmer has been celebrating after staking
£2,000 on a six-pronged accumulator at the beginning of the
football season, reports the Mirror.
Mr Palmer's bet, which was placed at a price of 180-1, included
the prediction that Chelsea would be Premiership champions, Lyon
would win the French Championship and that Gretna would be champions
of the Scottish second division.
For the spread to be successful, West Bromwich Albion, Millwall
and Rushden & Diamonds all had to be relegated from their respective
divisions, which they were.
Rupert Adams of the bookmaker William Hill told the Mirror: "It
took foresight to place a bet like that."
According to the newspaper, Mr Palmer's spread betting win is the
largest amount paid out for a pre-season accumulator in Britain
and he plans to spend his winnings on a family holiday.
Most bookmakers have specific football betting coupons, which state
the odds each team has of winning on a particular weekend.
By spread betting, in the form of a football accumulator, a customer
will increase the odds of winning a bet, but will also increase
the amount of money they will win if the bet is successful.
